Vodka Tasting at Cristall Distillery

When in Russia…
Russians firmly believe that vodka was created on their land, and commercial production was firmly established by the 14th century. Its history is interesting. In 1540, Czar Ivan the Terrible took a break from beheading his enemies and established the first government vodka monopoly. Distilling licenses were handed out to nobles and all other distilleries were banned. As a result, moonshining then became common practice. Vodka production became an integral part of Russian society as Aristocratic landowners operated stills on their estates and produced high-quality vodkas flavored with everything from acorns to horseradish and mint. In Russia today, vodka production has returned to the pre-Revolutionary roots and high-quality brands are once again being produced for the social elite as well as for export, while the more mainstream brands are still being widely consumed. You’ll have the option to sample exotic local vodkas under the direction of a specialist who will explain the traditions and food pairings. Traditional Russian hors d’oeuvres will accompany the vodka, and guests will also see the equipment used for production, including barrels, glasses and original clay pots. Through the knowledge of onsite experts, learn how Russians properly drink a shot, discover your flavor preferences and get a glimpse into this longstanding tradition.

Departures: Daily (subject to availability) / 3 hours
Tour type: Private
Included: English-speaking guide, required admission fees to distillery including special vodka tasting and light snacks, transportation as needed

Your dedicated guide will meet you at your hotel for a private tour immersed in Russia’s turbulent history. An incredible 6-ton concrete door slides open to reveal a small set of stairs, where you will be met by uniformed soldiers at a command post who will run a ‘test’ radiation scan. A film about the Cold War will be shown before you explore the communications equipment and network of tunnels and a secret bunker, which had housed 2500 workers below ground. For the adventurous, an “extreme” tour can be added. Taking place in the dark, remote passageways of the bunker, the extreme tour demonstrates survival operations in soviet times with a potential Third World War looming. Sanduny - Russian Bath House Experience

Bath Houses in Russia are an integral part of the country’s history and still play a strong role in the day-to-day life of locals. Sanduny is one of the oldest baths in Moscow, and dedicated attendants are firmly rooted in its traditions. Customarily, the bath house was a favorite place for high society folks and is believed to treat disease and help fight stress, or simply relax and socialize with friends. The Viennese architect of Sanduny used distinct design elements of baroque, rococo, renaissance, Gothic and classical styles to create this beautiful spa. This experience allows the option to customize your visit with a private bath room, traditional Russian ‘venik’ experience (brooms made of tree branches), a luxury massage or a personalized spa treatment. Tsars Winter Palace with Hermitage Museum

Located on the embankment of the River Neva, the Winter Palace is one of St. Petersburg’s most impressive sights. This lavish palace was built in 1762 originally to impress the daughter of Peter the Great and then became the main residence of the Russian Tsars. The basic display areas of the Hermitage occupy 365 rooms in the Main Museum Complex.
