When will the Winter Games be in the US?

Currently, no U.S. cities are confirmed as future Winter Games hosts. However, Salt Lake City has expressed interest in hosting the Winter Games in 2030 or 2034.

How long do the Winter Games last?

The Winter Games are 17 days long, running from February 4-20, 2022. There are a small number of disciplines that have preliminary events taking place in the two days before the Games officially begin on February 4th.

How to qualify for the Winter Games?

For the Winter Games, the qualification process depends on the event. Each different sport is governed by an international sports federation who works closely with the International Olympic Committee. Within each sport, there are various methods to determine who will be selected. Some sports conduct Olympic Trial competitions to determine who will head to the Games. Some are based on individual performance over the period leading up to the Games, sometimes in terms of a points or ranking system. In the case of team sports, the team is usually selected based on athletes’ performance.

In addition, to encourage global participation there are limits on the number of athletes that can participate for a country in each event, as well as quotas for certain regions. The hosting country also may receive automatic qualification for some events.
