2022 World Cup Venues in Qatar

The 2022 World Cup will be one of the most compact in the tournament’s history. All of the stadiums are within a 55 kilometer (35 mile) radius from Doha, which will make it incredibly convenient for fans. Unlike past tournaments, those traveling for the event can base themselves in one hotel and be near all the different host stadiums without having to fly between cities or take overnight trips. It’s a dream for spectators. Adding to the experience are the incredible venues (all complete with cooling systems to combat the desert heat), most of which are being built specifically for the World Cup.

Located about 55 kilometers (35 miles) north of Doha, Al Khor is a coastal city with an abundance of beaches, parks, and mangrove forests. It’s a smaller city but offers plenty for visitors to enjoy. The seafront corniche makes for a scenic walk and the popular Purple Island is a wonderful conservation area worthy of exploration.

Al Bayt Stadium is truly unique. The entire structure is covered by a giant tent, reminiscent of those historically used by nomadic peoples in the region. While it serves as a nod to Qatar’s past, it also looks forward to the future. The top level of the stadium is portable and is intended to be donated to a developing nation after the World Cup. With seating for 60,000, Al Bayt Stadium is one of the larger stadiums in the tournament and will host one of the semi-final matches.

Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium

Al Rayyan is a city that is passionate about sports, particularly soccer. While it’s technically the second largest city in Qatar, it’s actually considered part of the Doha metropolitan area and close to all of Doha’s attractions including great museums, world-class shopping, heaps of restaurants, and plenty of cultural sites and attractions.

The new Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium is home to the beloved Al Rayyan SC soccer team. Like many of the other 2022 World Cup stadiums, Al Rayyan Stadium was built in a modular design with sustainability in mind. Though the stadium will house 40,000 seats for the tournament, many of those will later be removed and donated to other projects.

What was originally a fishing and pearling village has developed into one of Qatar’s major urban centers. Al Wakrah is located just south of Doha, and has an abundance of historic architecture. Perhaps its most popular attraction is Al Wakrah Souq — a market with dozens of shops and cafés located on the coastline.

Aesthetically, Al Janoub Stadium is one of the most impressive in the tournament. It boasts a sleek, almost futuristic design. While visitors to the World Cup will enjoy the stadium for watching soccer during the World Cup, it also provides locals in the community with an impressive list of new amenities including a school, cycling and running tracks, gyms, and restaurants.

Qatar’s capital city of Doha is one of the wealthiest cities in the world. It’s also becoming more and more well-known as a world-class travel destination and it’s no wonder why. Doha has all the ingredients for a travel hotspot: luxe five-star hotels, incredible shopping, unique cultural attractions, and innovative restaurants. It fuses the relaxation of the beach life with the excitement of the city. Add in the World Cup and you’ve got one extraordinary combination.

The impressive new Al Thumama Stadium opened in October 2021. Designed to resemble a gahfiya (the traditional Arabian woven headwear worn by males), the stadium will seat 40,000 for World Cup matches, though 20,000 of those seats will be removed following the tournament and donated to developing countries.

Khalifa International Stadium is one of only two existing stadiums that will serve as a venue for the 2022 World Cup. Built in 1976, the 40,000-seat stadium has undergone a number of improvements since. Most recently, an extensive renovation was completed in 2017 that included the addition of a state-of-the-art cooling system to ensure both spectators and players are comfortable for the World Cup matches.

Education City Stadium, which opened in June 2020, is located in Doha’s Education City area, just 7 kilometers from the heart of Doha via metro. The stunning exterior of the stadium features a complex geometrical pattern that filters and reflects light, designed to represent a diamond in the desert.

Stadium 974 (formerly Ras Abu Aboud Stadium) will be the first fully dismountable stadium to serve as a World Cup host venue. As an incredible example of sustainable infrastructure, the stadium has been constructed in a modular format which allows it to later be transported and reassembled in a different location or even converted into smaller structures. The number 974 represents Qatar’s international dialing code, as well as the number of shipping containers used in the construction of the stadium.

Lusail Stadium

Lusail is a planned city that’s still in development, approximately 15 kilometers (10 miles) north of Doha. The impressive design for the city includes marinas, manmade islands, parks, residential areas, luxury shopping, golf courses, and a number of entertainment districts. Once construction is complete Lusail will be home to approximately 250,000 residents.

One of the city’s main attractions is Lusail Stadium, an 80,000-seat venue that will be the main venue for the 2022 World Cup. Surrounded by a moat, the exterior of the stadium represents the sails of a traditional dhow boat. Inside, the stadium has been designed to have the entire pitch shaded, with a cooling system to maintain ideal temperatures. Lusail Stadium will host the opening and closing ceremonies as well as the World Cup Final.
