You will witness the world’s greatest athletes competing for gold in one of the most spectacular settings of any metropolis on the planet. Whether you prefer the natural beauty of the gorgeous mountains and white-sand beaches, or experiencing the cultural hum of Rio’s residents, known as Cariocas, this paradise is sure to put on a spectacle never seen in Games history, and you can be there to see it all!
Below you will find a suggested sample itinerary, please remember that we will completely customize your itinerary based on your tastes, desires and budget.
Day 1 – Thursday, August 4, 2016
Upon arrival in Rio you will be greeted outside baggage claim and transferred by private vehicle to Hotel Santa Teresa, your home for the next six nights. One of the continent’s most beautiful hotels, this Relais and Chateaux hotel is a Condé Nast Hot List winner, and was recently voted “Brazil’s best hotel.” The Hotel Santa Teresa is one of those places that can only be described as magical, with its spectacular views of Rio and a vantage point that truly takes your breath away. This charming yet sophisticated property, formerly a historical coffee plantation, has been recently restored to an extraordinary boutique hotel. Your well-appointed junior suite provides beautiful views over the mountains and is the perfect spot to relax and unwind after a day exploring exciting Rio.
After you have had the opportunity to freshen up and relax after your day of travel, you will be met by your Roadtrips Onsite Host for a welcome drink to review your personalized itinerary and the opportunity to ask your host any questions or make any requests.
This evening, we suggest a relaxed dinner at Térèze Restaurant conveniently located in your hotel. This sophisticated yet casual venue provides patrons the opportunity to savour world cuisine in an eco-chic setting. With over 200 wine labels from the old and new world to complement the dishes that fuse regional produce, the team at Térèze provide an experience of flavors, texture, and aromas to enjoy.
Day 2 – Friday, August 5, 2016
After a delicious breakfast this morning, enjoy the remainder of the day at your leisure. You may want to explore the area around Copacabana Beach, or find a spot on its white sand beach to relax in the sun.
This evening you will be met by your driver and transferred to Maracana Stadium for the Opening Ceremonies of the 2016 Summer Games. Upon arrival at the stadium, make your way to your premium seats and get ready to see the grand spectacle that only the Opening Ceremonies can deliver. Annually Rio puts on one of the world’s largest parties, Carnaval, and they are guaranteed to put on a show that will exude the life and energy of their most famous event. After the Ceremonies are over, your driver will be ready and waiting to return you to your hotel.
Day 3 – Saturday, August 6, 2016
After breakfast this morning you will be met by your personal guide for a private tour of Corcovado. This half-day tour will take you to visit the most famous statue in all of Rio, Christ the Redeemer on top of Corcovado Mountain. Drive through the exotic Tijuca National Park to reach the main scenic spot in the city. The view is breathtaking and you are sure to take some unforgettable pictures from this iconic South American peak.
This evening we suggest heading to the fashionable Leblon area for dinner at Zuka, a hip restaurant offering Brazilian fusion with a foodie flair. On the menu is contemporary and sophisticated cuisine prepared in a kitchen designed for patrons to view Chef Ludmilla Soeiro create their meals on the grill. The restaurant also boasts a varied wine list (ask for a recommendation and you may be rewarded with a special South American reserve that has been set aside for such a request).
Day 4 – Sunday, August 7, 2016
Today enjoy breakfast at your leisure before meeting your personal driver who will transport you to the Aquatics Stadium for this morning’s swimming session. Present since the first Modern Games in 1896, swimming is one of the most popular Summer Games sports with athletes consistently putting on spectacular performances of strength and endurance, and you will have the opportunity to see the best-of-the-best compete for gold. After the event, we suggest exploring Rio Olympic Park, which will be buzzing with excitement from the start of the Opening Ceremonies until the Olympic flame is extinguished.
Day 5 – Monday, August 8, 2016
After breakfast, enjoy the remainder of the day at your leisure. You may want to join residents and visitors of Rio alike for a walk along the spectacular crescent of Copacabana beach or check out some of the world-class shopping in the area, before meeting your personal driver who will transport you to Copacabana Stadium for this evening’s preliminary Men’s and Women’s Beach Volleyball matches. With its location on Copacabana Beach, the Copacabana Stadium is sure to be one of the Summer Games most electric venues, and what better sport to see played out on the sand of this famed location than the exciting Beach Volleyball competition. After the event, your driver will be ready and waiting to return you to your hotel.
Day 6 – Tuesday, August 9, 2016
After breakfast, you will be met by your personal driver who will transport you to Rio Olympic Arena located in the Olympic Park for this afternoon’s Artistic Gymnastics session. As with swimming, Gymnastics has been present since the first Modern Games in 1896, and puts on display the athletes’ incredible agility and strength. From the beam to the vault, you will find yourself at the edge of your seat, cheering on these spectacular athletes as they battle for the elusive gold medal.
On your last evening in Rio, we suggest dinner at Restaurante Aprazivel, overlooking Botafogo and the lights of Rio. See for yourself why it was voted the top restaurant in the city by the New York Times.
Day 7 – Wednesday, August 10, 2016
Today enjoy your sumptuous breakfast once more before checking out of the Hotel Santa Teresa. After experiencing Rio and the excitement of the Games, you may want to consider adding an excursion to your package to experience even more of spectacular South America, including luxury Amazon cruises and tours to Machu Picchu. Whether you are departing for home or extending your vacation to include another amazing destination, your private vehicle will be ready and waiting to take you to your departing flight.

Known as the cidade maravilhosa (marvelous city), Rio de Janeiro certainly lives up to its name. Its incredible diverse landscape offers sparkling white sand beaches and lush rainforest, ensuring every lucky visitor to the city will leave happy. Fans from around the globe will flock to the 2016 Summer Games in Rio and although sporting events will be the highlight for most, Rio boasts an endless list of activities and attractions. From relaxing on the beach, to taking a trip up Corcovado or Sugarloaf Mountains, to hiking through the sub-tropical rainforest, there truly is something for everyone. In fact, some of the venues alone, such as Maracanã Stadium, are attractions in themselves.
With Brazil also playing host to the World Cup in 2014, not only will Rio be the center of the sporting world leading up to 2016, they will undoubtedly be well-prepared to host the much-anticipated 2016 Summer Games. Aiming to deliver the greatest sporting event in the world, preparations for the Rio Games began even before they won the bid to host in 2009. As the first South American country to host the Summer Games, the stakes are high, and Rio’s version is sure to impress.
For the 2016 Summer Games, Rio’s Event Venues Have Been Divided into 4 Zones:
Located in the west part of the city, affluent Barra is visually stunning. With panoramic mountain views, aquamarine beaches, and acres of greenspace, Barra’s natural beauty will provide a spectacular backdrop for the 2016 Summer Games.
Hosting 20 different disciplines and showcasing half of the games’ athletes, the Barra Zone will be the center of the action in 2016. Barra is home to both Rio Olympic Park and the Olympic Village and will feature some of the most popular events, including basketball, diving, and swimming, just to name a few.
World-famous Copacabana is what many people envision of when they think of Rio; the long stretch of beach, friendly, fun-loving locals (known as Cariocas), open-air cafes, and lively dance halls ensure there is always something to do at any time of the day (or night)!
Copacabana Zone venues include Copacabana Stadium, which in the summer of 2016 will be filled with enthusiastic beach volleyball fans, Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas for rowing and cayak/canoe sprint, and Fort Copacabana, where thousands of fans will cheer on their hometown heroes in the rowing competitions. Other notable sports in Copacabana include triathlon, swimming (open water), and cycling.
Just North of Copacabana is the Maracanã Zone. Close to the city’s downtown core and Rio de Janeiro State University, the area has a promenade and bicycle path, attracting people to the area for both work and play.
Site of the opening and closing ceremonies, Maracanã Stadium will also play host to the World Cup Final in 2014. This area also boasts João Havelange Stadium and Maracanãzinho Arena. Fans of athletics, volleyball, and of course football, can look forward to spending time the popular Maracanã Zone.
Also in western Rio, and north of the Barra Zone, rests Deodoro. The most rural of all four zones, it offers a more suburban feel, with plenty of green space surrounding the venues, and is popular with younger Cariocas.
Among the many venues in Deodoro are the National Equestrian Center and X Park, which will house Olympic Mountain Bike Park, Olympic Whitewater Stadium, and Olympic BMX Center. As a result, the summer of 2016 will see Deodoro filled with an interesting blend of equine fans and extreme sports enthusiasts.
