2019 Women’s World Cup Add On Tours and Excursions

There’s a reason that France is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world. There are so many sides of this incredible country to experience. In particular, Lyon has heaps to offer including unique historic architecture, incredible scenery, and of course, its famous culinary scene. We’ve carefully selected some Lyon’s most worthwhile excursions for our guests to enjoy.

Best of Lyon Tour

Join your dedicated, private guide to see the best that the beautiful city of Lyon has to offer. You will be picked up at your hotel to first explore Place Bellecour along to the Saône River; along the way taking in the stunning view over the Saint-Georges district. Follow the left bank to the modern, architecturally unique Confluence district, then head up Fourvière Hill, passing by the Roman theatre and the Odeon. Make your way to Notre-Dame de Fourvière; the view as you approach this basilica is impressive. This guided tour will then treat you to a bird’s-eye view of Loyasse cemetery, where Lyon’s most famous people are buried. As you continue to immerse yourself in this splendid city through the eyes of your guide, pass by the old ramparts of Vaise Fort to the river embankment and the splendid sights of Vieux-Lyon, the trompe-l’oeil painting of Lyon’s most famous inhabitants, and Les Subsistances. You will then explore Presqu’île and Place des Terreaux, through the heart of the city. Travel across the Rhône, the banks of which are a popular relaxation area for locals, and photograph the imposing façade of the Grand Hôtel-Dieu. The return journey to your hotel will pass through Place des Jacobins with its lovely fountain. Your guide can assist with further sightseeing recommendations or restaurant suggestions.

Historic Lyon Walking Tour

From the church of Saint-Paul to that of Saint-Georges, Vieux-Lyon extends across the scenic banks of the Saône River and is steeped in history. With the guidance of your private English-speaking guide, explore narrow cobbled alleyways and the famous traboules that shape this city. These hidden passageways, which lead from one street to the next, reveal superbly renovated architectural treasures: internal courtyards, Italian-style galleries and spiral staircases. Along the way you’ll encounter iconic monuments such as La Maison du Chamarier, the Hôtel de Gadagne or La Loge du Change. Explore the remains of the churches of Sainte Croix and Saint Etienne backing onto Saint Jean; truly symbolic of the historic power of the church in Lyon. Your expert guide will share with you the secrets and history which have shaped this historical district, named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Lyonnais Cuisine Experience

The city of Lyon draws its renowned culinary reputation from the surrounding region and the expertise of its local chefs. This is no doubt why Curnonsky, the famous culinary critic, dubbed it the “capital of world gastronomy”. Your knowledgeable culinary guide will introduce you to this world, from the silk workers’ mâchons to the ingredients of the traditional recipes of the Mères Lyonnais (the “Mothers of Lyon”). Lyon has earned itself a reputation in which the “art of cooking” has become a veritable religion. Paul Bocuse has inspired this heritage by adding his own expertise as a top chef with international influence, and his cuisine does not disappoint. Taking place in the heart of the pretty Presqu’île district and Old Lyon, this experience includes culinary anecdotes, specialty food tasting and custom recommendations.

Lights of Lyon by Tram

This small, eclectic train climbs up the slopes of the historic Croix-Rousse district with unusual charm. Lyon’s trams are particularly quaint and offer an unusual perspective by straying off the beaten track. And the vehicle’s design was not chosen at random; it resembles Croix-Rousse’s former cable car nicknamed ‘Ficelle’ by the locals. After departing your hotel accompanied by your private guide, walk the short distance to Terreaux Plaza*, home to Lyon’s trams. Your guide will provide commentary as you scale the hills of the Croix-Rousse district, taking in unusual architecture, the amphitheatre of the three Gauls, and several painted murals through the tram’s “panoramic” roof. Following your tram tour, your guide will escort you through the heart of the city to take in some sights and attractions before returning to your hotel.

*Approximately 20-minute walk to the Plaza; private transportation can be arranged if preferred

Beaujolais Region: Wine and Cheese Tasting

Following breakfast, you will be picked up at your hotel to travel to Southern Beaujolais, also called “The Golden Stones region”. A scenic hour’s drive from the heart of Lyon, start your gourmet tour with your dedicated guide with a visit to an artisan Boulangerie to take in the aroma of freshly baked bread, meet the baker, and discover the secrets of creating the world-famous baguette. If you are tempted, sample a croissant or brioche with a hot cappuccino. Continue your drive through the picturesque Beaujolais region and stop at a traditional fromagerie, learn the characteristics and creation process of locally made cheeses and taste a selection of exceptional French cheeses. Accompanied by your private guide, your next stop will be a traditional winery to learn how the French have perfected this skill; sample a selection of different Beaujolais’ in one of the world’s best-known wine producing regions. Enjoy lunch at the winery or a specially selected local restaurant prior to returning to Lyon in the care of your guide.

Oingt Village – Gourmet Lunch and Artisan Chocolate

Oingt is a small village renowned as one of the prettiest in the region. Your private guide will pick you up at your hotel for a 45-minute drive to this medieval town, home to locals, artists and craftsmen. Your guide will lead you through a maze of little streets with unforgettable names to enjoy magnificent panoramas over the Beaujolais region. Stop at a local café for a croissant and a “café au lait” before exploring the town center’s churches, honey colored houses and surrounding beautiful landscapes.

Enjoy a speciality lunch at a handpicked restaurant; local flavours and French cuisine at its finest. Satisfied, continue with your guide to meet a Maître Chocolatier; visit his workshop and enjoy a private demonstration of how he turns crafted chocolate in exquisite boutique creations. Sample these artisan chocolates before returning to Lyon with your guide this afternoon.
