Roadtrips’ Picks for World Cup Soccer Teams to Watch

World Cup SoccerThe 2014 World Cup is a great opportunity for sporting fans to watch some of the best soccer teams in the world putting forth their best efforts to achieve the highest ranking in football. Here are Roadtrips’ picks for World Cup soccer teams to watch at the 2014 event:

  • Brazil is one of the World Cup soccer teams to watch, not just because it is the host of the 2014 World Cup but because of its astonishing achievements. It is the only national team to have participated in every World Cup and it is also the most successful national football team in the history of the World Cup, having won five championships (1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002).
  • Spain’s recent achievements in the international soccer arena have led many experts to consider it one of the best teams in world football. Spain is the World and European Champion, having won both the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 Euro. These two victories come to complement their Euro 2008 title making Spain the only team with three such consecutive wins.
  • Italy is the second most successful national team in the history of the World Cup with 4 titles earned in 1934, 1938, 1982, and 2006. In Europe, Italy is known as the Squadra Azzura (the Blue Team) which has also appeared in two finals and reached a third place and a fourth place, definitely making it one of the World Cup soccer teams to watch.
  • The Netherlands are the 2010 finalists and hold a record of playing in the most World Cup finals without ever winning. They’ve finished second in 1974, 1978, and 2010 and are a reputed team known for their mastery of total football. The Netherlands won the European Championship in 1988. The team was also ranked number one in 2011 in the world rankings and became the second national soccer team to top the rankings without winning a World Cup previously.
  • Germany participated in the World Cup with two teams after WWII and before the country was reunited in 1988. However, their record comes to reinforce their status as one of the most successful national teams in the world with three World Cups, three European Championships, three times runner-up in the European Championships and four times runner-up in the World Cup. Germany is the current 2013 UEFA Championships League finalists.
  • Argentina is also among the most successful World Cup soccer teams and has appeared in four World Cup finals. They lost the first to Uruguay in 1930, won the second against the Netherlands in 1978 and the third against West Germany in 1986. However, they lost their fourth final against Germany in 1990 by a much disputed penalty. Argentina’s most legendary player was Diego Maradona, who was a master of the game.
  • England is the world’s oldest national football team in the world alongside Scotland. They have a unique way of playing, the “English” way, and they are recognized for their deadly attacks. However, the team has won only one Championship in 1966 against West Germany and they have never won a UEFA European Football Championship. England is definitely one of the World Cup soccer teams to watch this year to see if they can fight their way to the top.
