Built with 12,000 tons of steel, Heinz Field stadium is the primary home of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the University of Pittsburgh Panthers football teams. Officially opened in 2001, this stadium holds over 65,000 spectators, and has sold out for every Steelers home game. That streak was carried over from the previous stadium, Three Rivers Stadium, which sold out all of its Steelers home games dating back to 1972. On New Year’s Day, 2011, hockey will be played at the stadium for the first time, brining the spirit of the game to the fans of Pittsburgh in an outdoor environment that returns the sport to its roots.
