This tour of Rio will show you a remarkable contrast of four centuries of architecture and will surely satisfy the history enthusiasts. TOP ↑
Rio Historical Walking Tour
Enjoy a guided walking tour in downtown Rio. Many cariocas still refer to downtown as “the City”, as if it were a city apart – so busy, profuse and attractive. Rich in history and buildings of great architectural appeal, the center of the former capital of the country is best absorbed by immersing yourself in it. Attractions include Cinelândia Station, Carioca Square, the cobble-stoned Travessa do Comercio and the former residence of Carmen Miranda. An expert, English-speaking guide will introduce you to the heart of the city on this Rio tour. TOP ↑
A Favela Tour reveals the way of life of around 20% of Rio’s population. It alters the conception that favelas are simply no-go areas dominated by criminals, and opens a new perspective of Rio society; its contrasts and paradoxes. The tour takes visitors to the community of Vila Canoas, with around 2,500 people, and Rocinha, the largest favela in Brazil, with a population of 85,000 dwellers. Both are placed within the rich neighborhood of São Conrado. Discover this unique culture and enjoy breathtaking views while walking through narrow alleyways. TOP ↑
Brazilian Samba & Folklore Show
Thirty beautiful “mulata-dancers” and a great male cast take a culture journey through popular Brazilian music. Its history started when the Portuguese settlers couldn’t impose their habits, religion or slavery on the natives that lived free on the shores and rainforests of their land. The only solution was for the settlers
to bring Africans for labor, and with it came their culture. The atmosphere is cheerful, informal and fun. TOP ↑
Surfing is a very popular activity in Rio, right after soccer – the favorite national sport! The long coast offers wonderful areas for surfing, with many beach breaks providing ideal conditions for easy and safe learning. The best beaches are Barra da Tijuca, Prainha and Grumari, on the West zone. Qualified instructors are prepared to either teach beginners or assist experienced surfers. Return transportation and all necessary equipment are included, along with local carioca expertise! TOP ↑
Enjoy a light ride on the beach shoreline or a more challenging option in Tijuca National Park. Both are guided, and provide wonderful scenery and excellent exercise. The beach ride starts at your hotel and we cycle along Rio’s most famous beaches, stopping to drink fresh coconut water. We may also cycle an extra hour around the Lagoa (Rio’s lake). On the forest option we drive to Tijuca Park and cycle on both uphill and downhill paved lanes in the forest, visiting the park’s main attractions. TOP ↑
Rio’s Nightlife Tour
Rio is world famous for its music. With your knowledgeable guide, mix with the local audience to hear and dance to the best in the city! There is music for all tastes in Rio, but the most interesting places for visitors are the bars in Lapa, the old area of downtown. On any night of the week, you will find a variety of talented musicians playing live Brazilian music. Lapa has just recently boomed as a nightlife area, the first of the music venues opened only eight years ago. What is remarkable is the mixed audience that’s attracted by samba and chorinho (a faster beat with less percussion and more strings). You will see people from 18 to 80, dancing and singing the old songs that everyone knows by heart. TOP ↑
The Pedra Da Gavea Hike
This is an imposing granite mountain on Rio’s shoreline, easily recognizable for its huge flat top. It is certainly the city’s most beautiful hike, but it is only recommended for the reasonably fit and experienced hiker. During 2/3 of the trail, we are inside the Atlantic Rain Forest. On the last part the vegetation is lower and the views are breathtaking; a blend of forested slopes, ocean and city. After a short rock-climb we reach the summit, which is Rio’s most spectacular viewpoint. On the way back we stop for a refreshing dip at Barra da Tijuca Beach. TOP ↑
Tijuca Forest Hike
This park is known as the largest urban forest on earth. Its huge mountains covered with tropical vegetation contrast with dramatic granite rocks forming a unique background for Rio’s beaches. We will visit the Park’s best viewpoints, waterfalls and hike up Tijuca Peak (Rio’s highest at 3300 ft). Guests may combine this half day tour with an afternoon visit to the charming district of Santa Teresa, with its cobblestone hilly streets, old homes, interesting museums and Rio’s last surviving tram line. TOP ↑
This cooling mountain resort sits at an altitude of 900m (2750ft), 66 km north of Rio. It is known as the “Imperial City” due to its popularity with the imperial family during the 19th century. Start with a visit to the nearby west part of the Serra dos Órgãos National Park. After a light hike in the Atlantic Rainforest, we reach the big Paradise pool in the Bonfim River for a refreshing plunge. Hiking a bit further we find Bride Veil’s Waterfall. After lunch in a local restaurant surrounded by forested mountains, we drive to Petrópolis to visit the town’s main historic sites such as the Imperial Museum, the Santos Dumont House and the Crystal Palace. TOP ↑
What was once a small fisherman’s village is now a charming place where most of the houses are ateliers, pousadas, sophisticated cafés or rustic restaurants. A statue of Brigitte Bardot attracted the attention of several artists and tourists in the 1960 ́s. The city receives currents from Ecuador from one side and from the South pole on the other side, which results in the beaches having a dramatic mix of warm and cold water. TOP ↑
Angra Dos Reis
The vast bay of Angra dos Reis is studded with more lush islands than there are days in the year! Some are the private playgrounds of wealthy Cariocas; others are media islands, owned by magazines devoted to the cult of the Brazilian celebrity, and permanently twinkling with camera flashes. A few are thronged with bikinis and board shorts in high season and pulsate to forró and samba beats. And many are as wild and unspoilt as they were when the Portuguese arrived 500 years ago. Yachts and speedboats flit across the bay, ferrying their bronzed and smiling cargo between the islands and beaches. In between, they dock at floating bars and restaurants for an icy caipirinha or catch of the day, and at night to dance or be lulled by the gentle sound of bossa nova. TOP ↑
Paraty is a preserved Portuguese colonial town with a rich history. It is located on the ‘Costa Verde’ – a lush, green corridor that runs along the coastline of Brazil. Rising up as high as 1,300 meters behind the town are tropical forest, mountains, and waterfalls. It is surrounded by parks and nature reserves, and includes an indigenous village. TOP ↑
