Golf is a sport that is such a natural fit for exciting travel experiences. Not only do golf tournaments happen in some breathtaking places, whether your travel preferences run to destinations steeped in history or those where the sun shines all the time, but it is usually pretty easy to take your clubs with you and play a few holes wherever you travel to. Golf travel is always fun.
We love showing our guests the very best destinations and tournaments in golf, and with that in mind, wanted to showcase some of the superb golf trips you could take this year.
US Open, Pittsburgh, PA, June 16th through 20th. Held at the beautiful and historic Oakmont Country Club, the US Open is of course a fantastic event to attend. Oakmont has been operating since 1903 and has hosted more major championships than any other course in the US.
Last year saw some superb golf, and records were broken when Jordan Spieth became the youngest title winner in 92 years. The greens at Oakmont are lightning fast, which leads to exciting play whoever is there, though we can’t wait to see whether Spieth defends his title after what just went down at the Masters.
At this event our guests have the option of a Trophy Club package, which gives them access to a tented Club, which is the perfect place to relax with drinks and a bite to eat without missing a minute of the golf action as it is presented on big-screens for guests. We’re also able to build a number of fun extras into guest’s packages, whether that be getting to play a few rounds yourself or heading to a luxurious spa instead.
British Open, Royal Troon Golf Club, Scotland, July 15th though 22nd. Getting to see an epic tournament such as this played in the birthplace of golf itself is a very special thing indeed. Royal Troon offers a stunning course located along the Ayrshire coastline, where golf was played for many years before the Club was formed in 1878. The town of Troon itself is pretty, as are the many surrounding villages. The rugged beauty of the area is something to be seen; you couldn’t get a prettier setting for a tournament.
Those who come with us to the British Open have the opportunity to play at some spectacular historic courses in Scotland while there, including the iconic Old course at St Andrews, the oldest course in the world, known as the Home of Golf. We can also add in restaurant reservations, spa trips, and other experiences to round out your experience after you play those rounds.
PGA Championships, Springfield, NJ, July 30th through August 1st. What’s fantastic about this tournament is that yes the golf is going to be amazing, played at Baltusrol Golf Club’s excellent lower course, but you can stay and play in New York, which is just a short drive away. Really, with this trip there’s no limit to the fun stuff you could add on to your itinerary to create a once-in-a-lifetime sports adventure.
Baltusrol first opened in 1895 and is considered one of the finest courses in the US. Many tournaments have been held there, and the lower course is a favorite of many players, including Jack Nicklaus. This year we’re offering our guests Wanamaker Club tickets, which give access to an air-conditioned lounge serving upscale food and refreshments, with big-screen TVs ensuring you miss none of the action while there.
Summer Games, Rio de Janeiro, August 4th through 22nd. For the first time in over a century, golf will be played at the Summer Games, and we can get you there to see all the action. An exceptional Gil Hanse-designed course has been built for the games, and top golfers from all over the world have expressed excitement about going to Rio to represent their countries, and of course the possibility of taking home gold.
We’ve got the very best hotels lined up for the Summer Games, and additional excursions that will take you beyond the Games to show you awesome places in Brazil (and Peru too, if that’s on your bucket list). We’re super excited about going to the Games, and seeing how golf fits in to the mix.
Ryder Cup, Minneapolis, MN, September 29th through October 3rd. Team USA hasn’t had much luck winning the Ryder Cup of late, they haven’t taken it home since 2008 in fact. But, this year the US is hosting, and there’s hope that they can pull it together to win – there are no doubt some incredible players on the team, they just have to play better together. It is going to be a great tournament regardless, and one we’re looking forward to attending.
Hazeltine National Golf Club is hosting, and what a course it has, featuring rolling hills, mature woodlands, lakes, and prairies. We’ve got beautiful hotels lined up for our guests to stay at in Minneapolis, plenty of awesome add-ons available, and VIP upgrades available too. This is going to make for a fantastic trip.
