Why Sports Events Create Amazing Travel Experiences

When travelling to attend a sports event, it offers a completely different experience to the one you’d get if you were just going on a vacation to that same place, says Duane Penner, Roadtrips’ Head of Sales. “A lot of these events are held in once in a lifetime destinations, and as they vary greatly from year to year, it’s always a completely different experience even if you go to every World Cup or every Summer Games.”

Take for example the past three Soccer World Cups, held in South Africa in 2010, Brazil in 2014, and to be held in Russia in 2018. You couldn’t get three more different destinations, each offering very unique experiences, cultures, and diversions. Being in those amazing bucket-list worthy places while something as incredible as one of the ultimate sporting events means that you couldn’t be visiting at a more exciting time. You get to see that destination at their polished best, and when the majority of the population is thrilled to be hosting international visitors.

What elevates taking one of these trips is when you’re at that destination with hosts who know exactly how to show you the best possible time in that destination, how to guide you through any potential sticky situations, gets you into the best hotels and restaurants, and can hook you up with experiences that you might not otherwise be able to find. This is where Roadtrips excels.

To give a few examples, during the last World Cup, we got one of the local soccer teams to put on clinics on Copacabana Beach for our guests and their families, organized surf lessons, and had guests hang-gliding from Pedra Bonita in São Conrado. In South Africa, between the matches we visited wildlife refuges and hung out with big cats and elephants, and took a bike tour of Soweto.

So yes, you’re in that destination for the games, of course, but by creating a luxury and very personalized experience for their guests, Roadtrips makes every trip a big deal once-in-a-lifetime experience that you’ll never fully get over. Until you attend the next one of course, and have the time of your life there too. From the moment I was met at the Natal Airport, until my wife and I were escorted to the International Airport in Rio for the flight back home, our experience at the 2014 World Cup was perfect. I cannot possibly put into words how wonderful it was that we were fortunate to be part of this experience. My wife and I have been to several World Cups and other sport events, but could not have anticipated such a memorable 3 weeks. It was obviously a very challenging, all consuming job for the Roadtrips staff to put together, but the result was better than anyone could wish for. We always felt that someone cared about our experience and made sure we were satisfied. We can hardly wait for the next adventure!
