There’s a certain glamour that comes with following Formula One. Whether you’re at a Grand Prix in North America, Europe, or in more exotic locales, the excitement is always there, and each race brings a certain something to the circuit. It’s no secret that over here at Roadtrips we’re a little Formula One obsessed, and taking guests to prestige Formula One events is one of our favorite things to do. We’re dedicating today’s blog post to four fantastic Formula One events that we can’t wait for in 2017.
Spanish Grand Prix, May 12 – 15
Why it’s so cool: The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is a drivers’ favorite, in part because it offers every type of corner and is consequently often used for winter test driving by teams. Last year’s race was especially thrilling as it was won by an 18-year-old, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, the youngest driver ever to win a Grand Prix.
Location: Barcelona is a wonderful old city where you’ll find stunning architecture by Gaudi, art museums filled with works by Picasso and classical greats, and some of the best food and nightlife in Europe.
If you go: Eat at AbaC, an intimate restaurant which specializes in exceptional modern Catalan cuisine and carries two Michelin stars. Head chef Jordi Cruz is the youngest Spaniard to be awarded a Michelin star (and second youngest chef of any nationality to get one).
Monaco Grand Prix, May 25 -29
Why it’s so cool: Set in the tiny principality of Monaco, this Formula One event is pure glamour. Celebrities and royalty flock here year after year to watch some of the toughest racing on the Formula One circuit. The race winds through the historic city, along the waterfront past the harbor filled with huge yachts, through a tunnel, and drivers are forced to navigate tight turns at breakneck speeds. The Monaco Grand Prix is one of the most exciting sporting events in the world, and going there is addictive – many of our guests make an annual pilgrimage to this event.
Location: Located along the glorious French Riviera, Monaco is where Grace Kelly became Princess Grace, and where the world’s rich and beautiful still congregate to this day. The weather is beautiful, Monte Carlo is a stunning city, and Monaco is an incredible destination.
If you go: Be sure to try your luck at the Casino de Monte-Carlo, built by a prince in 1863 and architecturally stunning. This was the inspiration for Casino Royale, Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel, and served as a location in the Never Say Never Again and Goldeneye Bond movies, as well as being used more recently in Oceans 12.
Italian Grand Prix, September 1 – 4
Why it’s so cool: Autodromo Nazionale Monza was built in 1922, and is known for being one of the fastest and most exciting tracks on the Formula One circuit. Monza offers an absolutely beautiful track located in royal parklands, and the atmosphere there is just electric. Expect to see Ferrari fans in a sea of red shirts, and plenty of passion and enthusiasm from the Italian fans.
Location: Though Monza is beautiful and offers historic attractions, we tend to stay with our guests in dazzling Milan (which is very close) where you can explore the finest Italian culture, food, fashion, and extravagance.
If you go: Take a drive out to Lake Como (90 minutes away), super deluxe vacation spot of the likes of George Clooney, Bill Gates, and Tom Cruise. Check into one of the historic hotels there, or visit one of the many Michelin starred restaurants for a meal you’ll never forget.
US Grand Prix, October 19 – 23
Why it’s so cool: Although there’s been racing in the US since 1908, the US Grand Prix has made Circuit of the Americas in Austin its home since 2012, and it is one of the most exciting tracks there is to race on. This circuit is the first in the US to be purpose built for Formula One, which means conditions are fun and interesting for racers and spectators (there’s an uphill approach to the first turn, for example).
Location: Austin is amazing. You’ve got all that famous Texan hospitality served up with a super-charged music scene, an excellent mix of high-end restaurants and BBQ joints, and plenty of luxury diversions that make for one incredible trip.
If you go: Line up for some of the best BBQ in Texas at Franklin Barbeque. Brisket is slow-smoked for 18 hours, and absolutely delicious. The line-up starts at 10am, and everything is sold out by 1pm most days.
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, November 23 – 27
Why it’s so cool: The Yas Marina Circuit is a futuristic purpose built track that sits along the Arabian Sea, and offers exciting racing with every course configuration and curve you could ever desire on a track. Everything about this event is lavish, and there are huge parties and concerts every night of the Grand Prix (performers are yet to be confirmed for 2017, but last year they had The Chemical Brothers, Lionel Ritchie, and Rihanna).
Location: Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates, and a haven for the international jet set. The Yas Marina is glamorous but totally different to anywhere else in the world, and this event is the perfect excuse to check it out.
If you go: Stay an extra few days and book yourself in for a driving experience at the Yas Marina Circuit. You get to choose from taking a Ferrari, Mercedes-AMG GTS, Jaguar F-Type S Coupe, Aston Martin, or Formula One car around the circuit with an instructor.
