Combining sports and travel is a fun way to see the world, because you get the passion and enthusiasm of fans in every destination that you visit when there’s a major sporting event going on. Here are some of the best summer sports events coming up, which we think would make awesome gifts for Father’s Day or graduation (because experiences always make better gifts than things do):
America’s Cup, May 25 – June 28
Why go: This exciting and glamorous sailing event was first run in 1851, making it the oldest trophy in international sport, and offers the biggest purse of any yachting event. Steeped in tradition, but offering up exciting sailing with the most modern vessels, this is going to be such an exciting event to see live.
The destination: For the first time ever, the America’s Cup is being held in gloriously beautiful Bermuda. The sailing conditions there are going to be perfect, and this island destination is wonderful. There are pink sand beaches, excellent golfing and diving, superb restaurants, and the very best in accommodations.
Confederations Cup Final, June 29 – July 3
Why go: In the lead up to next year’s World Cup, this tournament sees eight of the best teams in the world compete.Put together every four years the year before World Cup, it brings together the regional champions from the six Confederations, along with the last World Cup holder and the host nation. This will be an exciting event featuring some of the world’s best soccer players.
The destination: St Petersburg is an incredible destination. There you’ll find iconic monuments such as the cheerily named Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, with its golden domes, the world-renowned Hermitage Museum, Winter Palace, and various cultural attractions. Going to Miami is always a good idea, especially when paired with a premiere sporting event such as the MLB All-Star Game.
British Open, July 19 – 24
Why go: The best golfers on the world love this event, and come to compete for the coveted Claret Cup. The event has been held at Royal Birkdale Golf Club many times before (in fact the club has hosted more Championship and International events than any other since the Second World War), and it is in a spectacular setting of rolling dunes and lush greens.
The destination: Southport is just north of Liverpool, home of The Beatles (and you can do various tours that let you delve into their musical legacy while there), and Liverpool Football Club (Anfield, their home stadium offers tours and a museum), and plenty of other cultural attractions.
