It’s a big year here at Roadtrips. This year marks our 25th anniversary and we have lots of exciting things on the horizon. Looking back on the last quarter-century, we’ve had lots of fun reminiscing and we thought it might be interesting to share a bit about how it all began.
Dave and Liesa Guenther, 1992
Way back in 1992, Roadtrips’ President Dave Guenther left a career in the financial industry to follow his passion. He combined his deep-rooted love of travel and sports and created Roadtrips in his hometown of Winnipeg, Canada. Staffed by a handful of equally impassioned employees, the company quickly became the leading hockey tour operator in the world. We weren’t just about hockey though, Roadtrips provided premium sports travel packages to die-hard sports fans around Canada and the United States, creating lots of great memories in the process.
Over the next ten years or so, Roadtrips saw a lot of growth. Our team grew and so did our event list. We branched out of North America into major international events like the Summer and Winter Games. We realized the need for flexibility and started offering customizable itineraries instead of set packages. We were getting rave reviews from clients as well as the press, including a “Best of the Web” nod by Forbes magazine in 2001.
We were quickly becoming a leader in the industry and by 2010 we were the official travel supplier of some of the industry’s most esteemed consortiums including the Signature Travel Network, the Ensemble Travel Group, and the American Express Travel Network. In the years to follow, we’d also become the official travel supplier of the Travel Leaders Network. We were now offering luxury travel packages to the biggest sporting events around the globe. In 2013, we were thrilled to learn that our VP of Sales, Duane Penner, was named to the prestigious A-List as the World’s Top Travel Specialist for International Sporting Events by Travel + Leisure magazine.
As much as we stayed true to our original passions of sports and travel, over the years we incorporated new passions for food and luxury into our product. We have an affinity for the finer things and we’re proud to offer upscale amenities for our clients to enjoy. Things like private luxury accommodations, Michelin-starred culinary experiences, and exclusive VIP parties have become popular add-ons to our packages.

Today, while a lot of things have changed, there are a lot of things that haven’t. We’re just as passionate as we were back in 1992. We continue to look for ways to improve our sports travel experiences and that’s a priority for our entire team, not just for Dave and our executive staff. (Speaking of Dave, you’ll still find him hosting clients at our major events just as he has for the last 25 years.)
Thank you for being part of our journey this far. Whether you’ve travelled with us already, hope to in the future, or have entrusted us with your clients, we have a few things up our sleeve that we think might pique your interest.
Reminiscing about our past has invigorated us. We’ve come a long way since 1992 and we promise to keep growing and evolving in order to continue providing extraordinary sports travel experiences. The future is bright and we’ve never been more excited about what’s to come.
